NB: here, the « unilateral » character corresponds to situations where the patient has a symptomatic keratoconus on one side but does not complain of a loss of vision in the other eye. In many cases, there are topographical abnormalities on the supposedly « healthy » eye, since it is rare for patients to rub one eye only. Nevertheless, in patients who truly rub only one eye and never the other, truly strictly unilateral forms of keratoconus are observed. This reinforces the causal role of eye rubbing in the genesis of keratoconus.
